sTAGE '0' BREAST CANCER

STAGE ‘0’ IS SIMILAR TO DCIS – DUCTAL CARCINOMA IN SITU

SEE DCIS HERE

In situ means ‘in place’ because the cancer cells at Stage ‘0’ remain located in the place they started.

They have not spread to nearby tissues, so this stage of cancer IS OFTEN CURABLE.

Surgery can usually remove the entire tumor.

IS STAGE ‘0’ CANCER  REALLY CANCER?

An example of carcinoma in situ is ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS,

which is considered an early form of breast cancer and occurs when abnormal cells form in the breast’s milk duct.

Stage ‘0’ breast cancer is typically thought of as non-invasive, but researchers have found that women diagnosed with stage 0, has an overall mortality rate was 3.3 per cent, whereas  THE MORTALITY RATE FOR YOUNG BLACK WOMEN WAS  7.8 PER CENT. These are US figures but probably reflect a similar global pattern.
